Running Out of Tank Water
Unless you are a registered farmer (which is who Rural Aid is for), there is almost no government water relief for everyday families on tank water. If your tank is empty and you can't afford a water carrier, here are a few practical workarounds and places worth asking.
Turn your pump off at the power point straight away. If it runs dry trying to suck air, the motor can burn out and leave you with an expensive repair bill on top of everything else.
Instead of buying bottled water or casks from the supermarket, most regional councils run 24/7 Potable Water Fill Stations (Standpipes) where you can fill 20L jerry cans or water drums with clean drinking water for a few cents per litre. Call your local council to find your closest fill point.
- Salvos (1300 371 288), Vinnies (13 18 12) & Neighbourhood Centres: They don't advertise water grants, but they hold discretionary Emergency Relief funds. Explain that you are on tank water with no running water at home, and ask if they can pay a local water carrier's invoice directly.
- No Interest Loans (NILS - 13 64 57): Can pay a water carrier invoice directly with $0 interest and $0 fees, paid back in small fortnightly amounts.
- Borrowing a 1,000L Water Pod: Post in your local Pay It Forward or community group - many locals have a 1,000L IBC water pod on a ute or trailer and will help haul a load from the council fill station.
- If You Rent: Your landlord must supply clean, full tanks at the start of your lease, maintain gutters, downpipes, and pumps, and keep tanks free from contamination. If your tank ran dry because of a leak or uncleaned gutters - or if your lease doesn't specifically state that you must pay for water refills - the landlord is responsible for refilling it.
